Isle of Lewis

We are staying in the north west of Lewis, near the sea. There are sheep grazing right next to our house. The villages are strung out along the road a bit back from the ocean but we are a short walk from Siabost beach, that is in Gaelic, in English it is Shawbost. The largest Gaelic speaking population in Scotland is in the north of Lewis, all the signs are in Gaelic with English in small lettering, which is really neat but don’t ask us how to pronounce anything.

We got a late start today, it was not raining so we headed to the beach and took a three hour cliff walk among the sheep. The sheep all run off when we get anywhere near to them. The coast line is very interesting as it juts in and out. We finally found our way to a waymarked trail that took us over the land to Dailbeag beach. Then we took to the road to make our way back and were met by a small flock of geese who came directly down the road to greet us before they veered into a small loch for a paddle around.
